During all the goal-setting that comes with the beginning of the new year, we spent some time one evening discussing the home projects we plan to tackle in 2023. We are still recovering from the kitchen remodel this past summer, so this year will not feature any major interior projects. Instead, we will focus on smaller, mostly DIY updates and decorating. However, we are hoping to complete a substantial exterior project – more on that and our other plans below.
game room
We plan to repaint the game room, and the Samplize samples on the wall will clue you in to the color direction. Yes, I’m planning to go darker. This room gets tons of light, so much so that the existing BM Kendall Charcoal on the walls does not read as dramatic as I would like. I’m considering painting the french doors as well. A few additional decorative items and we’ll be done (for now 😉)!
office
My office will see new paint, including the trim and lower half. I love the BM Aegean Teal in here, but I want to try a monochromatic paint look, and I worry the existing color might be a bit much all over. I also want to make the storage, furnishings, and décor more intentional. Random small shelves and anything vaguely office-y were put in this room without much thought when we moved in. I will keep what works and rethink what doesn’t. Finally, this room desperately needs a larger rug. I may opt for a new look, or layer the existing small rug over a larger natural fiber.
bonus room
We painted our third floor bonus room last March, got 95% finished, and stopped. I needed a new brush extender to get into those corners, never got around to purchasing one, and moved on to the next thing. (I can’t be the only one who does that.) We will also replace the horrible lights and dangerously low ceiling fan, and hopefully add an ottoman. We envision this room as a teen hangout, and would love to replace the couch with a modular sectional for more lounging options, but this year we will focus on completing phase 1.
dining nook
The dining nook got a built-in window seat during our kitchen renovation, and you may recall that I purchased estate sale chairs and gave them a makeover late last year. I borrowed the accent chair and side table from another room and they may stay (or not). I plan to finish furnishing and decorating this space in 2023. A new table is a must, along with a custom cushion for the bench seat. Pillows, and perhaps a bar cart, would make the space look more finished.
patio
We have long wanted to put in a patio next to the deck. I usually have a very clear design vision for our projects; however, I am all over the place with this one. The only thing I am certain of is that it will include a fire feature. Fireplace or firepit? Woodburning or gas? No idea. Knee wall? Built-in grill? No idea. Shape? Materials? No idea. Or maybe too many ideas. Time to start looking at inspiration photos. Please feel free to send some my way!
exterior doors
This update is pretty boring but long overdue. We plan to replace our front door and the patio doors to the deck and screened porch. They are ancient, warped, rusted, seals popped, you name it. It’s time.
garage — maybe?
The garage has been the bane of my existence since we moved in. It is dirty and spider-y, and the storage is bad. I can’t even bring myself to share a picture. My husband did a substantial clean-out and reorganization over Thanksgiving weekend and it looks 1,000% better. We agree that it was a band-aid, however, and we plan to rip out the existing cabinets and shelves and replace them with storage that is actually useful. Will it happen in 2023? Only time will tell.
Of course, I will be tweaking things all over the house here and there throughout the year. A new pillow here, a picture light there, some new doorknobs… The possibilities are endless! I will keep you posted with updates all along the way! What are your plans for your home in 2023? Let me know in the comments!
