Inspiration

10 Aug

Today I am showcasing the work of Sara Hillery Interior Design.  I enjoy following “local” design talent, and Sara and her design firm have longstanding ties to Virginia.  Interiors designed by Sara have been featured in numerous print and online publications such as House Beautiful, Southern Home, Better Homes & Gardens, and Veranda.

Sara’s personal history may be rooted in the South; however, her designs do not speak to a particular region. Sara infuses traditional designs with bold prints and color. Her work reflects a belief in the importance of incorporating architectural details to elevate spaces and paying attention to scale in furnishings.  In her designs, Sara blends old and new, high and low, form and function.  And don’t forget to look up: many of Sara’s spaces feature statement lighting and/or ceilings – painted, lacquered, beams, paneled… she does it all!

Below is a selection of Sara’s designs. I encourage you to check out her full portfolio here. All images are via Sara Hillery Interior Design.

In this living room, Sara paired the calm blue, cream, and woods tones with pops of green. Although the art picks up some of the room’s colors, it provides contrast and packs a visual punch.

That fabric is everything. In this kitchen, Sara blended traditional white cabinets with tons of exposed brick, which can lean traditional OR industrial. Those beautiful elements recede into the background, allowing the statement lighting and bold, fun fabric to shine.

While these spaces are not from the same project, I grouped them to show off Sara’s range. The office on the left is hushed and moody. The butler’s pantry on the right is the opposite. Both reflect a high level of attention to detail, from the applied moulding in the office to the cabinet detail, window treatment, and ceiling in the pantry.

In this living room, Sara highlighted a traditional curved-arm settee with a bold print. In keeping the pillows and drapes solid, she avoided an overly granny-chic moment. That’s not to say that the room is without drama; the sweeping drapery and stunning chandelier make a subtle statement.

This darling and fun bedroom features a whimsical woodland animal print from Sara’s own line of fabrics. The art and antelope rug support the nature theme, and the wood light fixture and trim bring a dose of texture and rusticity.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this bit of inspiration from Sara Hillery. Leave a comment with your favorite design element, and click here for more designer spotlights!
