Temperatures are cooling and some leaves are just starting to turn here in Southeast Virginia. As Fall begins, I gravitate toward designs that evoke a warm, moody, cozy vibe. Whittney Parkinson Designs delivers those vibes in spades. Whittney Parkinson founded her eponymous Indianapolis-based design firm in 2016 and since then has completed numerous beautiful residential and commercial projects. Curl up with a cup of tea and scroll down for some lovely spaces!

Helford renovation
If you follow home design in any sort of way on Instagram, you have seen photos of this kitchen, with good reason. It is a beautiful study in contrast: light versus dark in the cabinetry and counters; polished versus rustic in the hardware and beams; angular versus round in the lines of the island, range hood, table, and pendants. The other spaces in the renovation are just as lovely. Note the attention to detail in the curve of the backsplash in the pantry, and the choice of material in the cabinet door. Whittney effectively blends traditional and modern, as seen in the living room. Even the spaces that are full of light feel warm and cozy, thanks to her use of layered texture.
1920s tudor
It is difficult to pin a date or a location on this kitchen design — it’s timeless. The putty-colored cabinets would feel right at home in an English Tudor. The tiled arch surrounding the window provides interesting character to the kitchen. The main bathroom is drama in its simplest form. Whittney added charm via the details, such as the stained glass on the cabinet fronts in the pantry. The secondary bathroom has a timeless and classic feel thanks to the stained vanity, hardware, and wall tile. And that mudroom! The color is pretty and unexpected, while the brick herringbone floors and styling give it the feel of an English boot room.
bolderwood renovation
Another stunning mudroom here! The color is bold, yet also reads like a neutral, and the space has beautiful and functional details. It’s a small and narrow mudroom, but with sufficient storage to keep all the things nice and tidy. In the great room, Whittney juxtaposes the high ceilings and abundant natural light with cozy, warm, and textural elements. The stone wall, the layered rugs, the leather chair. The kitchen is full of personality. I love the vintage look European-style range along with the mixed tones of the cabinetry and the full-height quartzite backsplash (I’m somewhat biased, having made the same selection in my own kitchen renovation. Post on that coming soon!)
