In this installment of my “One to Follow” series, I am sharing the designs of Connecticut-based McCory Interiors. Designer Kristen McCory received her formal design education at Syracuse University, but perhaps even more formative were her world travels as a professional basketball player. Kristen’s time abroad left her with a wide range of aesthetic influence and experience to draw on as she designs, using a range of textiles, colors, pattern, and accessories.

This project speaks to me. I can’t put my finger on one specific reason; it just feels good. The home itself does not appear to have much in the way of architectural features like beams and moulding. In this case, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The relatively quiet interior architecture, combined with neutral walls, allow the scenery to steal the show. The color palette is unified, but not matchy-matchy, and reflects the blues and greens of the hills and landscape outdoors. The décor and accessories are not truly symmetrical, but the eye gets that comfortable feeling of symmetry in the balance of “weight” and height in groupings. The pattern mix is engaging: plaid, florals, stripes, geometrics – colors and scale allow them to work together. There are too many fun details to list in lighting and accessories; scroll slowly to catch them.

Kristen’s other projects are varied and show her range. Some feature bold, bright, eclectic designs, while others are more serene and almost monochromatic. This reflects Kristen’s commitment to honoring the personalities and lifestyles of her clients, homes’ surroundings, and overseas influences. Enjoy this sampling of images from several of Kristen’s projects!
some takeaways
- Don’t be afraid to include something (or somethings) that doesn’t seem to “fit” as you’re pulling together a room. Unexpected details can offer so much personality!
- Adding pieces picked up on your travels to your décor is a great way to add visual interest to a room and to serve as reminders of your adventures.
- Allow the style of your home and its surroundings to set the tone for your designs, but don’t get locked in by them. Let your personality shine through!
