Inspiration

20 May

Boy oh boy, do I have some architectural eye candy for you today! Murphy & Co. Design is a residential architectural firm based in Minneapolis, MN. They specialize in designing homes that are classic and traditional, yet function well for today’s lifestyles. The spaces they design feature beautiful details such as extensive millwork, beams, and corbels, and each one feels distinct — no cookie cutter design here! Scroll on for a dose of architectural inspiration.

turtle lake residence

This home gives major New England vibes, with shingles, shutters, and stone. Exterior details to note (among many) are the charming salvaged cupola, the shingle design above the front door, and the cutouts on the shutters. Small details that enhance the charming character of the home. The interiors, beautifully done by Kipling House Interiors, lend themselves to the New England colonial feel.

COlonial on the bluff

This home has made the rounds on social media, and with good reason! There are a number of really lovely design elements at play here. First, there is an enormous amount of glass to maximize natural light and those amazing lake views, yet the window and french door styles keep it traditional. The repetition of the angled rooflines on the front and rear of the home and even on the chimney (zoom in!) is pleasing to the eye. And, as with their other projects, Murphy & Co. has included detailed interior features, including millwork, coffered ceilings, beams, and columns to add interest and define spaces.

Northwoods shingle style

This shingle-style home has a decidedly rustic feel, appropriate for its use as a lakeside vacation retreat. The use of stone and wood on the exterior and in the interior gives the home a sense of being created right from the materials found on the land. The curved staircase in the octagonal tower is stunning — and don’t neglect to look up and take in the tower’s ceiling detail! The entire home is focused around the lake views, and the setting is breathtaking!

So many beautiful features! Especially like the windows & staircases in each home. Just can’t pick a favorite.
